dwsyg2I copied this quick recipe from my grama, who subsequently copied it from the internet.

The recipe definitely works and is fun to make. I admit, the cake is not gourmet. The novelty is making it so quick in a coffee mug, and the fruits of your labor go nice with whipped cream. Also, I think how well you mix it affects the cake. Under-mixing will cause the batter to harden and burn to the edges. Using cake flour would make it fluffier, I think. I’ve made a couple and they are exciting!

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbs. flour
  • 4 tbs. sugar
  • 2 tbs. cocoa powder
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbs. milk
  • 3 tbs. oil
  • 3 tbs. choc. chips (optional)
  • splash of vanilla extract
  • 1 large coffee mug

Prep

  1. Add dry ingredients to mug, mix well
  2. add egg, mix well
  3. add milk & oil, mix well
  4. add vanilla & choc. chips (if using), mix well
  5. microwave for 3 min. at 1000 watts
  6. Cake will rise over top of mug; don’t be alarmed!
  7. allow to cool. Tip over onto plate if desired.

A person could dedicate an entire blog to Ohio weather. I heard something about a wind advisory for today, but I’m not sure if it’s that official. Weather.com told me that the winds were around 20 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. That’s breezy.

Last night I dreamed that my brother and I were in a department store,

deciding if we could reasonably do something illegal. We were looking at the posters; I knew something was up when the paper tubes sounded like jackhammers. Around 4:30 am, I woke and heard this flappy, banging noise. It was a whirlwind outside, raining and moaning and rattling my windows. I thought  our screen door came loose and was pounding on the siding. Nope. Not that. The aluminum trim stuff from our roof had torn loose in the night, and it was paddling against the building – of course, right at my window.

Gosh that was loud. My dad and brother were disturbed shortly after. I found a big crack in my window too. I haven’t noticed it before, so I assume it’s from the aluminum beating last night. On a lighter note, my Grama didn’t seem to mind. I don’t think she heard a thing. ha.

Ohio is funny like that.  We lost power at church towards the end of Sunday school. Props to Jay for keeping a cool head. I guess there is a messed up transformer? Who knows? I blame the weather. The cool thing was that the whole congregation gathered in the narthex (the big hallway outside the worship center) and Pastor Ed spoke to everyone from the balcony. It was impromptu and heart-warming. We all sang Amazing Grace together, and it never sounded so beautiful.

dec282008-014The best part of church was walking back to the car – the wind picked up and blew both of Grama’s earrings off.  Hanlei saw one of them go, so he chased it and found the other one. haha. I dont care who you are, that’s funny.

The Cardiff Castle, Museum, and other fun July 21, 2008

On Sunday, Mum and I woke up early so we could reach the city centre by 9am. We booked a 12pm tour of Cardiff Castle, grabbed some lunch and made several unscheduled visits to Jewelry shops along the way, finally making our way back to SEE the darn thing. The castle was just gorgeous! I remember standing in one of the windows of the tower and just thinking, “I wish I hadn’t cut my hair now. The Rapunzel bit would be so cool.” It’s crazy the way the wind whips around up there, and the stairs are incredibly steep and narrow. Me and Mum both were in skirt type dress – geting back to the ground was a feat.

While we were around we toured the house, watched a short film about the property, got some hot chocolate, and climbed up to the keep. The tour guide was so cool, because when he saw my bag, he asked if I was a Beatles fan, had I been to liverpool yet, etc. We were having a real chat. He had the perfect Welsh “wow i think my jokes are funny” bit. Of course, he got a lot of chuckles. And I know a lot of men with the same mentality, so perhaps that aspect is a global thing.

Also, the Museum who’s name I can’t remember was really good. There was alot of french art and 15th-18th Century Portraits which were interesting, though somewhat stereotypical. The Art guard people were especially friendly. Like most other times, one gentleman just couldn’t believe my mum was old enough to be my Mum. ha. He semed to think that she held the key to the fountain of youth, taking detailed notes on her diet, excercise, and ‘gin seng’. They had a whole exhibition on ceramics too, so my Mum was just bursting full of teapot excitement…I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it, but her latest crazes are housewares, antiques, old dishes, and jade jewelry. Oye.

I forgot to mention…Taking pictures inside the Mansion is strictly a no-no, due to conservation purposes. Not only did my mum lag behind so she could break this rule when our guide wasn’t looking, but she used the flash too! She denied this when I asked her about it, but I’ve got the photographic evidence! I was sure we’d be turned out of the house any second. I was disgruntled.
