Ordinary Adventures in Cleaning June 24, 2008

I had quite a moment yesterday. Since my mom left for Whales, and Henry went to work early, I decided to spend the day on my own at the flat instead of going out. Trust me, I needed the rest. After attempting a hot bath and failing, I pieced my art supplies back together, wiping away the chalk and charcoal dust that exploded inside.
Earlier, when I was doing some writing, I was moaning on about the dreary weather, and rhetorically asked, “Does England ever see the sky, or is it always weighted down by a thick blanket of rain clouds?” Ironically, in a few hours, the whole sky cleared up for the first time since I’ve been here, and I was so excited about the weather I had to go outside and take a few pictures.
Afterward, I weeded the garden, because the whole place was looking rather shoddy. Armed with a rag, pointy stick, and plastic bags, I cleaned up as much of the trash out there as I could, ending the whole episode with three full bags. See, the whole place is fenced in, so people must just throw rubbish over the fence or drop it from the windows upstairs…I found strange things. Highlights include: food wrappings, Styrofoam cups, a shovel, two broken glasses, a vacuum cleaner hose, three or four empty bottles of vodka, an old carton of orange juice, a bamboo stick, ten to fifteen feet of red and white striped caution tape, and several mysterious grocery bags filled with gravel (at least I hope it was gravel). Those bags were slung over tree branches and hiding under the ground cover. I didn’t poke around too much under there.
