Self portrait, Fall 2008I try to avoid illness most of the year, and generally succeed. However, the bitter Ohio winds have chilled my bones, and I’m sick and sorry.

Life is ever busy. With December comes pressing deadlines, and I’m feeling the pressure. I’ve decided to apply to quite a few colleges; most all of them are due at the end of December. Also, Brandon and I are working on a home design contest that must be ready before Christmas break – that’s in just a couple weeks. I suppose I should just relax. I think from this point on, my life is going to always be filled with deadlines.

In the art scheme of things, I’m in a lull. After cranking out my last painting and Reflections piece, it’s time for a creative recharge. It makes me giggle whenever someone asks me if I’m going to art school. I don’t think I could be creative all the time. When the semester changes, it will be time for Art 3.  I cant even imagine turning out a project a week. At least, nothing to impress.

After shopping for dress clothes for my brother (it’s going to be his first homecoming), I bought myself some new paint brushes. For someone who harps on about the evils of corn, evils of plastics, and covets natural food, I certainly love synthetic brushes. Today I picked up white nylon brushes – pretty brushes with blue handles – and tacky glue at Micheal’s. Thank you Aleah and Niki, for $20’s worth of gift card birthday leftovers. ha. It’s only been tucked in my wallet for 6 months.

While we were at the mall, I ran into my counselor, the DI coordinator, and elementary school gym teacher all at the same time. It was so cool to see them out and about, because really, I consider them all much more than teachers; they are really great people I’m always delighted to see.  It was a mood lifter.

There was never a real point of this from the beginning, but hey, can you blame a girl for trying? I should be asleep right now. These days, I feel like I’m paused at night, waiting for some divine thought or action or something. I guess I’ll go give it a shot.

In the words of Jason Reeves – “Love is Real” Don’t forget it.

Gosh, it’s been raining buckets for a couple days, straight through the night and plodding on constantly. Rain brings out the calm in me, but I just end up sleeping all the time, when I know I should be be doing homework or research or cleaning. The Suburban League tennis tournament was canceled last night because of the weather. Our coach said it’s a big deal, just because the tournament people are pretty anal about reschedules. I love the rain, but hopefully we a get a dry spell soon.

I don’t have much to say, but here’s some good news – my latest painting is nearly complete, and I should have new glasses in a week (I feel like I spent my whole life saying those words). Who’s excited?

A stand-still kind of weekend. September 8, 2008

This weekend has been a stand-still flurry of downtime. It consisted mostly of painting and the beginning stages of my college search. The searching is already giving me a headache. I grabbed a copy of The Princeton Review: The Best 368 Colleges at the library this weekend, accompanied by many hours of internet surfing and at least an hours worth of one sided parent discussions. This is the best time of my life.

The weather was flawless today, so i decided to try and paint on my back porch again. This was a mistake; this is always a mistake. The neighborhood 5-10 year olds crowd around and try to watch, ask questions, touch stuff, and squabble. I dont mind this really, becasue I love to encourage people about art. After about twenty minutes, repeating “Adam, please avoid eating the wet paint. Yes, Jasmine, you were here last time. Sable! Don’t climb on Hanlei’s bike! ” gets old. This is why I could not be a good teacher. No patience.

Some people might think my mum is creepy for taking pictures of me when Im not looking, half hidden behind a sculpture. But I know better.

London was a highlight on Friday, and the fact that we made it home without having to detour in unplanned cities was only a plus. We left at 5am and got home at about 2am, and the coach wasn’t all that bad. At least on the coach you’ve got leg room, which is more than i could say for my most recent plane journeys.

The first thing we did was take the city bus from Victoria Station to the British Musuem, and spent the entire morning there. The place is staggering in terms of collection, giving the Metropolitan Museum of Art a run for it’s money. At least it does it terms of size, but I think I will always prefer the staggering buildings filled with art. Anyway, the mummies were excellent. The whole section was really impressive, with huge pillars from temples, statues, and others. The Greek and Roman sculptures were also a big bonus for me. They just breathe with past life, whether they are missing arms or heads or noses. haha. I always wonder how accurate they are – how much likeness there is to a person from another time.

Later, we hopped a bus to somewhere else, stopped at a place called the Japanese Centre so mum could take a LONG look and finally buy some bowls (more…)

My mum’s friend and coworker, Rachel, used to be an artist, and she’s as colourful as they come.  She shows me her old work occasionally, and it was lovely everytime. Not long ago, she brought me a suprise at the office. Two special ink pens, a drawing pad, a brush, and a minature vial to hold water – I was delighted. When you swipe water over the pen marks, it runs and makes a sort of ink wash effect. It’s wonderful!

She told me my ‘homework’ is to do at least one drawing a day. I was doing good until we took a couple of those day trips and it slipped my mind. She’s holding me to it though, so i need to catch up. Keep that on the DL.

The new exhibitions at The Manchester Gallery were actually quite wonderful. My favorite of the lot was the show Deodorant Type: Sculptures By Gwon Osang. I wasn’t permitted to take pictures inside, but the sculptures were so inspiring that i did a few sketches. Here’s what an article said:

Containing 14 individual artworks, including several new and specially commissioned pieces, Deodorant Type forms the first major UK showcase of Osang’s extraordinary human sculptures and looks certain not to disappoint.

Beginning with an intensive photo session, during which the artist painstakingly documents every inch of the model’s clothed and often heavily posed body, Osang creates each art work by sculpting a life-size 3D replica of the individual, on to which he then applies hundreds of still images. Finally, a light glaze is applied over the work, lending each piece an eerie translucent glow.

They were really cool. In the gallery, it was just a huge, open room, so i decided to sit on the floor and do my thing. I was pleasantly surprised and about 5 other twenty something art students decided to do the same, sketchpads and all. See, either a) they saw me sitting in the middle of the floor and decided to follow my example, or b) they would have done this anyway and i happened to stumble on kindred spirits. Either way, the episode was quite jolly and put me in a great mood.

There was also an old guy that strolled over. He took a look at the pose i was drawing and remarked, ” ‘ey. I can pose li’ that yeh know.” he chuckled. I reply, “Alrigh’. Give it a go, then,” and we both had a good laugh.  See, it was this one on the left:

it was quite the day, for sure. I went to a different gallery this afternoon, called Cornerhouse. I was kind of disapointed with it, becasue all they had there right now was a pititful book seleection, a weird art film show, over priced food and not enough art. I ordered a smoothie from the cafe that was like 3 pounds and not all that great, but overall i really shouldn’t complain. I chilled out and came back to the university at leaest more entertained than when I left.
